System Cleanup

One way to increase the speed of your computer is to delete the temporary files on your computer.

There are three main directories that Microsoft recommends you clean out on a regular basis. This along with a defrag on the hard drive will help your system performance. To complete the basic steps do the following:

  1. Click on Start and then Run
  2. type TEMP and click OK (Note: This will open Windows Explorer to the Temp folder - all of these files can be removed)
  3. Press the Ctrl key and the letter A to select all files in the folder.
  4. Press the DEL key and confirm yes to delete these files.
  5. You may receive an error message that a file can not be deleted due to it being used by a current application or program. Just click OK on the message and the press the Ctrl key and then left click on this file name and it will De-Select this file. Then press the DEL key again to continue where you left off. Do this until it has removed all the files possible from this directory. Click on the X to close the window.
  6. Repeat the above steps and type %TEMP% (I normally hit the Home key and then Shift 5, then the End key and Shift 5 rather than retype everything.) then click OK.
  7. Repeat the Ctrl A and DEL process like the last folder.
  8. Close the window when done.
  9. Repeat above steps and type PREFETCH, then repeat the steps.

When you have successfully removed the contents of these 3 folders make sure to empty your recycle bin.  This will clean up 80% of the temp files other than Temporary Internet Files. The manual process here is a little more difficult. If you want to know how I perform these steps call me and I can train you on how to do this.

Windows Vista Home Premium boot problems

Symptoms: Machine would not boot into normal mode

Action Taken:

1) Launched machine in Repair Mode - system found corrupt files.

2) Files removed were required therefore I restored to previous date. (No personal files affected)

3) Trend Micro was not allowing machine to boot without errors - expired required purchase or replace

4) Replaced Trend Micro and SpySweeper with AVG and Malwarebytes both FREE applications.

5) Performed a System Cleanup - vacuum inside of machine; software cleanup and removed all temp files from computer.

6) Upgraded Adobe Reader to Version 9 from 8.

7) Tested

 System seems fine now.
