How to remove temporary files from Windows XP computers.

 

These 3 folders are often emptied by Microsoft techs when they remote control an XP computer that is running slow. The procedures are similar for Vista. Windows 7 has a few more differences.

 

Click on Start, then Run

Then type PREFETCH (note: this folder contains install files for pre install of updates.)

 

Click on OK, then Edit and Select All (Alternate method is to press CTRL key then A to select all) and then DELETE key. Confirm Yes to delete all Example: 130 Files 7.34 Meg

When finished close the window.

 

Note if a file is open it will not be able to be deleted. Windows will give an error unable to delete file and a small confirmation window will appear. Click on OK to confirm you are not able to delete. This will close the small window. All files will be highlighted yet.  Press and hold the CTRL key and then click on the filename that cannot be deleted. This will unselect it and allow you to continue deleting. Once the file is deselected, press DEL again to continue deleting from where you left off.

 

Next Click on Start then Run

Then type TEMP

And do the same thing…Edit Select All and Delete (Red X icon at the top or Del key)

Next Click on Start then Run

Then type %temp%

And do the same thing…Edit Select All and Delete

         I would like to relate a computer repair result.  On February 24 & 25, 2009 I contacted Robert Johnson re: computer virus.  My husband likes to scope out the internet sources for selling cars.  One of the sites he visited left a virus on our computer. I had unsucessfully attempted to to remove the virus.  I contacted Robert Johnson on February 24, 2009 and related the problem to him.  He was able to access my computer with one of his programs, Go To Assist, and resolve the problem.  He also installed a anti-virus program .  It was awesome the method he used to resolve the problem.  I thought I would have to pack up the computer, take it to him to repair, and go back and pick it up when it was repaired.  We did this over the telephone with this program, Go To Assist.  He told me I should run the virus program to be sure there were no other virus on the computer.  I did as he said and the program found thirteen infected files.  I couldn't get them off the computer so I contacted Robert again and he removed the infected files with his Go To Assist program.  Needles to say I was  impressed.

         My computer knowledge is limited.  While working with me, Robert was very patient and understanding.  he is very knowlegeable about what he is doing with computers.  I would have no qualms about referring anyone to him for computer repair.
